Being Kept Very Busy
A relative of Sal and Ann Ciaramitaro, Dominic Ciaramitaro, a member
of the U.S. Marines was killed recently in Afghanistan. Since news of this
tragedy spread, Sal and Ann have been swamped with phone calls from
people expressing their condolences. Dominic used to come to the Eastern
Market on Saturdays and help Sal and Ann at Ciaramitaro Bros. Produce Co.,
and was a hard worker and popular youngster in the area. Eastern Market
Corporation extends our sympathies to the Ciaramitaro family.
Congratulations Alyson! The Michigan Apple Committee hosted its annual
Apple Festival at Eastern Market recently. Alyson Wendzel of Watervliet was
crowned the 2011 Michigan Apple Queen...just four years after her older sister
earned the same title.
More Activity at the Market. There have been several new activities and
contests recently at Eastern Market. They include: Apple Pie Baking Contest,
Hula Hoop Contest, Cow Milking Contest, Chainsaw Carver Contest, Pumpkin
Carving Demos, Karate Demonstrations, and A Scavenger Hunt.
Michigan Apple Gala and Auction. Festivities at Eastern Market's Apple
Gala and Auction featured a variety of events. They included a strolling supper
featuring local restaurants with multitudes of samplings; a Live Auction which
featured life size artificially designed apples rendered by local artists.
The Gala also held a cooking face-off highlighting two local chefs in a
battle to become the "Next Urban Chef." Various entertainment was
scattered throughout the evening, and an awards ceremony was held to
proclaim the winners.
Renovation of Shed No. 5 will begin on Jan. 12. It will cost around $6 million.
Eastern Market Tuesdays was so popular this year that in 2012 it will be
extended, according to Dan Carmody.
