Stall Rental Information
Thank you for your interest in the Detroit's Eastern Market. The Eastern Market, founded in 1891, is the largest historic market district in the country. The market is rich with history and is an important part of the southeast Michigan food system.
Vendors at the Eastern Market can be broken down into three categories:
Farmer
Those looking to sell produce that they grow themselves are given first priority at the Eastern Market. Along with your application please provide photos of your farm as well as photos of your stall/tables at other farmers markets, if applicable. If you have any special certifications (organic) or licenses (egg, dairy) please include copies of that information too.
DEFINITIONS:
FARMER: A vendor that grows 100% of his own products AND is also either (1) Michigan-based or (2) within 100 driving miles of Eastern Market, AND who owns, leases or operates a farm, dairy, orchard, greenhouse, nursery, poultry farm or raises livestock. This includes those who produce products made completely or predominantly of ingredients and materials grown on or gathered from their farm, dairy, orchard, garden, greenhouse, nursery, apiary or forest.
FARMER with locally purchased supplement: A vendor that grows less than 100% but at least 51% of his own products AND is also either (1) Michigan-based or (2) within 100 driving miles of Eastern Market, AND who owns, leases or operates a farm, dairy, orchard, greenhouse, nursery, poultry farm or raises livestock. This includes those who produce products made completely or predominantly of ingredients and materials grown on or gathered from their farm, dairy, orchard, garden, greenhouse, nursery, apiary or forest.
PLANTS, FLOWERS, GREENHOUSE/NURSERY: products that are grown, raised or finished for a minimum of 30 days and sold in flats, pots, hanging baskets, combo pots, by the stem, balled and burlapped or other common methods of the greenhouse/nursery industry.
Specialty Products
Specialty products are value-added food products like fresh baked goods, jams, sauces, jerky, etc. Please note: if you wish to sell one of these products, it must be produced in a commercially licensed kitchen. We require proof of the license. Samples and pictures of your products must be included with your application.
If your product is not currently produced in a licensed kitchen or still in the idea stage, you may want to contact the MSU Product Development Center at 517.432.8750 or www.productcenter.msu.edu. The Center is a very useful resource for all food entrepreneurs.
SPECIALTY: A vendor that processes specialty food items for resale. Generally the items must be manufactured or finished with ingredients grown in Michigan or 100 driving miles from Eastern Market.
The specialty category includes: Processed Produce, Baked Goods, Dairy, Eggs, Jams, Jellies, Honey, Syrup, Sauces, Coffee, Meat, Seafood or Poultry.
Reseller
Resellers and wholesalers have always been a big and important part of the Eastern Market. If you are interested in being a reseller, please consider specific products (for example, citrus, organic, ethnic) vs. just selling whatever is available in the market.
On your application, please be very specific about where you are obtaining your product from. For example, Detroit Produce Terminal, local farm, wholesale produce house, etc.
DEALER: Any vendor who purchases ANY products or grows less than 51% of his own products, regardless of whether he is Michigan based or is more than 100 driving miles from Eastern Market.
* CRAFT ITEMS OF ANY KIND ARE PROHIBITED UNDER THE SHEDS. FOR INFORMATION ON THE ARTISAN ALLEY, PLEASE CLICK HERE.
