Food Safety Training - A State Mandate

EMC works to assure food safety and therefore requires all vendors to practice Minimum Safe Standards for food sampling and safe food handling while at Eastern

In January 2007, the State of Michigan enacted amendments to the Michigan Food Law of 2000 which now mandates that all food service establishments employ a minimum of one certified food manager to ensure proper food sanitation and provide food safety training to their employees.

As a result of these amendments, all establishments must ensure that certified managers are responsible for:

  • Developing a food safety training program specific to their establishment
  • Providing training to all new hires as well as existing employees on a scheduled and ongoing basis, and not less than once per calendar year
  • Maintaining all training records and documentation
  • Developing or updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) on an annual or as needed basis

Facilities not in compliance with the guidelines established by the Michigan Food Law will be subject to code enforcement, including but not limited to: increased inspection frequency, limited licensing, and possible closure.


Food Safety Training - Detroit

On January 4, 2012, the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion (DWHP) announced that effective February 3, 2012 that due to budget cuts, they will no longer facilitate the Food Handler Permit training and will not issue food handler cards. In addition, DWHP announced that they will no longer provide Certified Professional Food Manager (aka ServSafe) training, as well.

In order to continue to provide the city of Detroit's Food Service Professionals with exemplary food safety training, PIC Food Safety Inc., an Oak Park, Michigan based food safety training and consulting services provider, has partnered with Eastern Market Corporation (EMC) to provide this state mandated training in the city.

Food Safety Certificate (CPFM)

Certified Professional Food Manager (CPFM) is frequently called the "ServSafe Certificate." This is a full day of training and includes lunch. Testing is offered at the end of the day.  However, if you do not feel prepared to test the same day as the class you may take the exam when you are comfortable at no additional charge. The cost covers a free retest if you do not pass the first time.

Cost: $225 Per Person   

Dates: First Mondays and Third Thursdays of every month

Basics Certification

This class is designed to replace the Detroit Food Handler Certification. While a Food Handler Card is no longer a city mandate, it is important for staff members to understand the basics of food safety. The stronger your staff is on food safety, the better value and service you will be able to offer to your guests.

Cost: $20 per person

Date: Every Third Thursday of the month

Time: 8 am - 11 am

Re-Certification Training (CPFM)

$125 Per Person

This class is available for individuals who have already been through training and simply need to renew his or her certification with a brief review of the material.  This four hour refresher course and examination is a perfect fit! Onsite training available.


Just the Test (CPFM)

$75 Per Person            
Self-study, proctored exam without class time.


Basics Certification

$400 Per Class:           
You value your staff and you know that knowledge is power, give them the food safety training they deserve. Put 20 employees in a room and have 3 hours of the basics.


HACCP Certification

 $750 Per Person        
Approximately 3 days of training, give or take a day depending on a property and its needs. Course includes manual and test.


ServSafe Alcohol Certification

$65 Per Person        
Serving alcohol can be a dangerous situation if staff doesn't have the tools they need to know how to deal with everyday situations of their job.


Just the Test (Alcohol ServSafe Certification)**
